| water |
- Water is a universal solvent. There is no other relatively cheap, readily available, non –toxic material capable of carrying out the tasks we require and expect of water.
- It has ability to dissolve every naturally occurring substance in earth’s crust, at different concentrations.
- This causes impurities and potential trouble for boilers, heat exchangers, chillers and other equipment which comes into its contact.
- As the tasks become more complex and the plant and machinery more sophisticated, the impurities in water cause problems resulting in reduced efficiency, increased maintenance and production loss.
|
| water hardness |
- It is mainly caused by the salts of Calcium and Magnesium.
Categorization :
- 1. Soft water : <60 ppm safe for human consumption
- 2. Moderately hard : 60-120 ppm
- 3. Hard : 120-180 ppm
- 4. Above 180 ppm : Very Hard
|
| HOW THE SCALES ARE FORMED |
| Deposition & Scale formation in steam generating systems results from the fact that the solubility of the deposit forming salts decreases with increasing temperature and concentration. |
| High concentration of Calcium, TDS, Alkalinity, all promote a greater tendency to form Scales. Scaling potential increases with temperature. That’s why same water at different temperatures has different scale deposits. |
Some of the more common constituents associated with deposition & scaling are: Calcium, Phosphate, Magnesium, Sulfate, Bi-Carbonate, Silicate, Carbonate and Iron.
|
| EFFECTS OF SCALES |
| CONSUMES MORE ENERGY : |
- 1/16th of an inch of scale is equivalent to approximately 3 inches of steel in heat transferability.
- ¼” of scale means higher energy consumption by 40%.
- Use of water in heating and cooling system invariably results in build up of scales. This not only hampers the free flow, but increases costs and reduces heat transfer efficiency. Moreover, it results in localized overheating of heat exchanger surfaces, which results in premature failure.
- Boilers: Scales are poor conductor of heat. As they retard heat, boiler tube metal temperatures increase. The approx. softening temperature of boiler tube is about 482.2 º C. If heat retardation of boiler deposits causes this temperature to be reach, tubes softening and rupture will occur.
